Arattai by Zoho: Can This Tamil-Named App Rival WhatsApp in India?

Zoho’s latest messaging app, Arattai, is creating a buzz in the Indian tech scene. In just 3 days, the app has crossed 3.5 lakh downloads, signaling strong early adoption. But beyond its growth, the app has reignited a long-running language debate in India.

The Language Controversy

Earlier this year, Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu urged South Indian engineers to learn Hindi for business, calling the lack of proficiency a “serious handicap.” His comments sparked nationwide controversy.

Now, the tables have turned. Arattai, which means “banter” in Tamil, is being criticized by some Hindi-speaking users for being difficult to pronounce. While some demand a more “generic” name for wider adoption, others defend the name as a matter of Tamil pride.

Features That Could Make Arattai a WhatsApp Rival

Despite the debate, Arattai offers several features that make it a strong contender in the messaging app market:

  • End-to-end encryption for secure chats

  • Group calls for friends and teams

  • Support for 20+ Indian languages, including Hindi, Tamil, and Bengali

  • Lightweight and fast performance for mobile devices

These features position Arattai as a serious WhatsApp alternative, especially for users seeking a homegrown Indian app.

What Users Are Saying

Opinions are divided:

  • Some users love the local touch and inclusive language support.

  • Others feel the Tamil name may hinder pan-India adoption.

The question remains: Should Arattai keep its original name or rebrand for wider appeal?
