Yesterday, I had the opportunity to watch Jurassic World: Rebirth, the latest thrilling installment in the Jurassic franchise. On the surface, it’s a high-octane adventure featuring genetically resurrected dinosaurs, intense survival sequences, and awe-inspiring visual effects.
However, beneath the surface lies a thought-provoking commentary on a far more dangerous predator than the Distortus Rex the global pharmaceutical lobby.
Interestingly, Jurassic World: Rebirth isn’t just about prehistoric beasts; it subtly exposes the manipulations of capitalist pharmaceutical corporations.
The storyline follows ParkerGenix, a pharmaceutical giant exploiting the DNA of surviving prehistoric creatures to develop a revolutionary heart disease treatment.
But their motives aren’t entirely noble. What unfolds is a sharp critique of corporate greed, secrecy, and the human cost of profit-driven science a theme that mirrors real-world issues.
This corporate greed is no fiction. The filmillustrates how pharma giants, much like the global arms industry, manipulate human vulnerabilities for profit. Just as war profiteers thrive on conflict, these pharmaceutical entities thrive on disease and desperation, keeping critical life-saving medicines under tight patents and inflated prices.

This thought-provoking theme in Jurassic World: Rebirth instantly reminded me of The Vaccine War, a hard-hitting and courageous Indian film directed by Vivek Agnihotri.
While Jurassic World: Rebirth uses the thrilling canvas of science fiction to depict the perils of corporate greed and unchecked scientific manipulation, The Vaccine War delivers a grounded, fact-based account of India’s real struggle against similar exploitative forces during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This reality strikingly parallels the fictional yet disturbingly familiar depiction of ParkerGenix in Jurassic World: Rebirth a pharmaceutical corporation manipulating groundbreaking science solely for monetary gain, heedless of the human cost and ethical boundaries.
Both films, though vastly different in genre and presentation, converge on a shared truth: when science becomes the playground of profit-hungry corporations, it ceases to serve humanity and instead becomes a tool of exploitation and control.

In Jurassic World: Rebirth, the high-stakes mission to collect biomaterial from the last surviving dinosaurs is presented under the noble guise of advancing medical research and saving lives.
However, beneath this façade lies the dark reality of corporate exploitation, where pharmaceutical executives and stakeholders are less concerned about human welfare and more obsessed with owning exclusive patents and controlling breakthrough treatments. Their ultimate goal is not global health but global profit, using science as a weapon of control.
On the other hand, The Vaccine War strips away the fictional layers and presents this corporate greed in its most raw and real form. The movie portrays the actual struggles of Indian scientists who, despite limited resources and overwhelming odds, developed Covaxin an indigenous vaccine during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Yet, instead of being universally celebrated, these scientists faced relentless attacks, discrediting campaigns, and orchestrated skepticism fueled by certain intellectual elites, media narratives, and international pharmaceutical interests.
For them, this wasn’t a speculative storyline it was a harsh reality where their efforts to protect their nation from a global health crisis were undermined by those who saw an opportunity for commercial gain.
Both stories underscore a critical message: when powerful industries whether in arms or pharmaceuticals prioritize profits over people, humanity bears the ultimate cost.
Celebrating Indigenous Science: A Lesson for Indian Cinema
There’s an ironic cultural reflection here too. Audiences celebrate these capitalist critiques when wrapped in a high-budget Hollywood package like Jurassic World, but tend to overlook or even criticize such narratives in Indian cinema. Vivek Agnihotri’s The Vaccine War deserves applause for bringing this essential discourse to the forefront exposing the manipulations of the pharma lobby while celebrating India’s scientific prowess.
