The Bengal Files: Vivek Agnihotri’s Bold Appeal Ahead of 5 September Release

New Delhi, September 4, 2025 – Filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, director of The Bengal Files, has made a heartfelt appeal to the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, seeking protection for the smooth release of his upcoming film in West Bengal. The film, which is scheduled to hit theatres nationwide on 5th September 2025, has already stirred intense political and social debates across the country.

An Open Letter to the President

In an emotional open letter addressed to the President, The Bengal Files producer Pallavi Joshi highlighted the alleged intimidation faced by the film’s team and theatre owners in West Bengal. The letter claims that political pressure and threats from ruling party workers are discouraging cinema halls from screening the film, even though there is no official ban.

“Now theatre owners have told us they are being intimidated, threatened and are refusing to screen it, fearing violence by ruling party workers,” the letter reads.

Pallavi Joshi urged the President to safeguard the constitutional right to freedom of expression, emphasizing that the film is not just entertainment but a voice for historical truth.

The Film and Its Controversy

The Bengal Files is the third and final part of Agnihotri’s acclaimed Files Trilogy, following The Tashkent Files and The Kashmir Files. The movie focuses on the long-suppressed history of the Hindu genocide during Direct Action Day in 1946, the horrors of Noakhali, and the trauma of Partition.

Agnihotri and Joshi allege that since the film’s announcement, they have faced multiple FIRs, cancelled events, and political hostility. The trailer launch in Kolkata was stopped earlier, and now, theatres are reportedly under pressure not to screen the film.

Cinema of Truth Needs Protection

Calling The Bengal Files a “cinema of truth,” Joshi stressed that freedom of art must not be silenced by political intimidation.

“This is cinema of truth. But truth also needs protection. I seek not a favour for a film but space for art, for truth, for Maa Bharati’s soul to speak without fear,” the letter appeals.

The plea also underlines that legendary actor Victor Banerjee and several Bengali organizations have already extended their support, proving that the film resonates with many who want this chapter of history to be told.

A Test for Free Speech and Democracy

With the release just a day away, the controversy around The Bengal Files has become more than just a film issue—it is being seen as a test of free speech and artistic freedom in India’s democracy.

Vivek Agnihotri has repeatedly asserted that the film’s purpose is not political but historical, aiming to bring forth stories buried in time. However, the political storm around its release shows the deep sensitivities the subject continues to hold.

As The Bengal Files gears up for its nationwide release on 5th September 2025, all eyes are on West Bengal, where the film’s screening remains uncertain. Agnihotri’s appeal to the President highlights the larger question: Can truth in cinema survive political intimidation?

If the President intervenes, it could set a landmark precedent for the protection of artistic expression and constitutional freedoms in India.
